Germany: Hike in the Mosel Valley Wineyards, July 30

On Monday Hella and Heinz took us down to the Mosel Valley, home of some of the finest white wines in Germany. The grapes are grown on the steep slopes on both sides of the river. With this location the grapes get the maximum amount of sun. That, along with the special soil here, gives the Mosel wines their special character.
There are special hiking trails along these mountains. Very steep, but with the help of special ladders, metal steps, and ropes even an unexperienced hiker can accomplish what otherwise would require real mountain climbing skill. We hiked the Calmont Trail along the slopes.
Here are a few pictures that give just a hint of the spectacular views you get up there.
